Al-Wakeel: How to Do Your Best and Hand Over the Outcome

"Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." (Qur'an 3:173)

The situation you know too well

You studied. You prepared. You applied. And now there's nothing left to do except wait, and the waiting is the hardest part. Your mind runs every bad outcome on repeat.

This is exactly where the Name Al-Wakeel (الوكيل) lives.

What Al-Wakeel means

Al-Wakeel is the Trustee, the Disposer of Affairs: the One you entrust your life, your worries and your outcomes to. A wakil in Arabic is someone you hand a matter over to so they can handle it on your behalf. When the One handling it is Allah, the matter is in the best possible hands.

Tawakkul is not doing nothing

True reliance (tawakkul) has two halves:

  1. Do your absolute best. Study for the exam. Send the application. Take the medicine.
  2. Then hand over the worry of the outcome. The result was never yours to carry.

Most anxiety comes from trying to carry the second half too. Al-Wakeel invites you to put it down.

The dhikr to hold on to

حَسْبُنَا اللَّهُ وَنِعْمَ الْوَكِيلُ Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-Wakeel: "Allah is sufficient for us, and He is the best Disposer of affairs." (Qur'an 3:173)

These words were said by Ibrahim (AS) when he was thrown into the fire, and by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions when they were told an army had gathered against them. (Sahih al-Bukhari 4563)

Try it this week

  • Before an exam or an interview: do your preparation, then say Hasbunallahu wa ni'mal-Wakeel and walk in lighter.
  • When you notice yourself replaying a bad outcome: say it once, slowly, and come back to the task in front of you.
